The blinking symbol is also called a cursor.

Applications that use text have a blinking symbol that marks the insertion point—the place where what you type will be inserted. (See Figure 3-6.) When you start a document, the insertion point is usually in the upper-left corner of the screen. As you type, the blinking symbol moves to the right. When you read the right margin, the insertion point moves to the start of the next line.. If you are in the middle of a word when you reach the right margin, the whole word moves to the next line automatically. This is called word wraparound.
