When you restart the computer, you'll see the message "Welcome to the IIGS" and a thermometer indicator to show the progress of the startup process. A few moments later you'll see the opening screen of the Finder.

When you're using the Finder, the colored or shaded area that appears on the screen is called the desktop, because you use it in much the same way you use a desk. You can lay out the electronic documents and folders you want t work with, move them around, put some on top of others, and even discard the ones you no longer need.

In the rest of this session, you'll learn many of the basic skills necessary to use the Finder effectively.
 

Pressing Command-Control-Reset to restart the computer is recommended only when you're not in the Finder. Whenever you're in the Finder—or running a program that you launched from the Finder—you should use the Finder's Shut Down command to restart or shut down the computer.
