Note that some commands (such as Clean Up) appear in black, while others (such as Empty Trash) are dimmed. Commands that are dimmed cannot be chosen at this time. (Because you haven't yet discarded anything in the Trash, there's nothing to empty; the Finder won't let you choose a command that wouldn't have any effect.)

3. Choose Clean Up from the Special menu.
Without releasing the mouse button, drag the pointer to the Clean Up command in the Special menu. When the command name is highlighted release the mouse button and watch what happens to the icons on the desktop.

When you release the mouse button, the icons on the desktop should move slightly, aligning themselves along a grid. (When you dragged the icons back to their original positions at the end of the last section, chances are you didn't return them to the exact same position.)

5. Choose Select All from the Edit menu.
Reposition the pointer on the word Edit in the menu bar, hold down the mouse button, and drag the pointer to the Select All command. When the command name is highlighted, release the mouse button.

When you release the mouse button, both icons on the desktop become highlighted.

6. Click anywhere on the screen (except one of the Icons).
This deselects both icons simultaneously.
