The IIgs serial port can handle up to 230Kbps in synchronous mode whilst operating as a localtalk port. For general asynchronous operations, the IIgs serial port is limited to a port speed (DTE) of 57.6kbps. Hence, the maximum speed modem you could use reliably on a IIgs is a V.34+ model (ie. 33.6kbps). A 56K modem won't work properly since these modems require a higher port speed.
