What type are the 5.25" drives ?

Only the Platinum Apple Unidisk 5.25" drives will work on the IIgs smartport. Other 5.25" drives such as the Unidisk //c and Unidisk 5.25" (beige) won't work in a daisy-chain fashion.

Also check that your system is set to boot from slot#6 (Check the control panel).
